Just joking! Although...
Het zit zo: een paar weken geleden besloot ik een paar dagen naar Middelburg te gaan. Het leek me een fijn stadje om te bezoeken dus ik zou me er vast vermaken. Bovendien ligt Arnemuiden vlakbij en daar heeft Jeanet haar handwerkwinkel. Dat weet ik omdat ik haar blog volg. Ze schrijft leuk, over leuke dingen en vooral...regelmatig verschijnen er berichten over het Unikatgaren. Ik heb er al naar zitten kijken, en kijken, en....ok, ik geef het toe: ik heb er ook al een beetje over zitten kwijlen. Zulke mooie kleuren! Een paar weken voor ik zou komen was er nog een lading toegekomen dus ik zorgde voor een extra tas om een flinke voorraad in te slaan. Als het vakantie is mag dat.
A few weeks ago I planned a stay in Middelburg. It seems a nice town to visit and I was sure I would have I nice time over there. Moreover, Arnemuiden is nearby and there is Jeanet's yarn shop. I know that because I follow her blog. She writes lovely about nice things and especially I like the posts about the Unikat Yarn. I've been watching that yarn, I observed it, I examined it...and OK, I admit I also dribbled over it. Those colours! A few weeks before I would be there, a new delivery of the yarn arrived, so I brought an extra bag to take in some stash. Being on holiday that is allowed.
Extra leuk werd het toen ik las dat net in de dagen dat ik daar was, er een activiteit zou doorgaan: het doorknippen van een knipbies. Fijn, leuk! Andere breifanaten ontmoeten en meteen wat bijleren.
Al gebied de eerlijkheid me te zeggen dat fair isle-breien niet echt in mijn top 5 staat. Ik vind het echt wérken en ben er nog steeds niet super handig in. Maar toen ik over de knipbiesdemonstratie vertelde aan de Leuvense breigenotes waren die superenthousiast. Zij waren erg benieuwd hoe de bies verstevigd zou worden, en dat ik maar goed moest opletten zodat ik het ook in Leuven kon komen vertellen. Vandaar dat spioneren dus.
Even nicer was the fact that during the period I would be there, a workshop would take place: the cutting of a steek. Lovely! Meeting other knitting fanatics en learning something new in the mean time, what could be better? Although I have to admit that fair isle-knitting is not in my top 5. I find it really hard working and I'm still not very good at it. But when I told about the demonstration to my fellow knitters in Leuven, they where thrilled. They were curious which technique would be used to reinforce the steek. So they asked me to pay attention and tell them all about it afterwards. Hence the spying.
Dus vol verwachting stapte ik de winkel binnen, die Unikat, waar is die Unikat. Ik zag vijf bollen staan. Oei. Ach, dat kon vast niet alles zijn. Maar jawel hoor, de Unikat vliegt hier buiten en Jeanet had alweer een ellenlange bestellijst klaar. Slik. Maar niet getreurd, ik nam toch alvast een bol Unikat in de kleur 'Indian Summer' mee en een bolletje Summerspray sokkenwol (heb je nooit teveel van) en een streng donkerblauwe Traumseide.
Full of expectation I entered the shop, that Unikat, where is that Unikat? I saw five balls of it, but sure that couldn't be all of it? But oh yes, it was. The Unikat yarn sells like hot cakes and Jeanet has already I huge list of orders for it. So I just bought one ball of Unikat in the colour 'Indian Summer', one ball Summerspray sock yarn ( I can never have enough of it) and a hank of dark blue Traumseide.
Intussen arriveerden de breidames. Het is in Arnemuiden niet anders dan in Leuven: er wordt vrolijk getaterd en geschaterd. Het wachten was op Charlotte, mét haar sjaal met knipbies. Ze had wel meer dan die ene sjaal bij! Wat een prachtige fair isle stukken maakt ze! Je kan haar projecten op Ravelry bekijken.
In the mean time the other knitting ladies were arriving. Arnemuiden is not different from Leuven: lively chatting and laughing is going on. We had to wait for Charlotte, and THE scarf with steek. When she arrived she brought more projects in Fair Isle, she makes really beautiful things. You can see them on Ravelry.
Maar dan waar het eigenlijk allemaal om ging: het knippen!
Voor dat de bies doorgeknipt kan worden moet deze eerst verstevigd worden, zodat ze naderhand niet kan gaan rafelen. Vaak wordt dit met de naaimachine gedaan, of wordt er met de hand een versteviging genaaid. Maar bij een lange in het rond gebreide sjaal is dat niet te doen. Dus demonstreerde Charlotte hiervoor een erg handige techniek. Langs de kniplijn, die over de middensteek van de bies loopt wordt aan weerszijden een ketting gehaakt. Flink als ik ben heb ik de techniek uitgeprobeerd op een proeflapje:

Before the steek can be cut, it need to be reinforced to avoid fraying. Often it's done with the sewing machine or by hand. But on a long, knitted in the round scarf that's impossible. So Charlotte showed us an handy technique. Alongside the cutting line, a slipstitch is crochetted. Brave as I am, I tried this technique on a swatch.

Ik weet het, ik had voor de duidelijkheid beter dikker garen en duidelijkere kleuren gebruikt. Maar hier, bij Kate Davies vind je een hele tutorial over de knipbies en de verdere afwerking ervan.
Want nee, na dat knippen ben je nog niet klaar. Je moet dan nog een massa steken oprapen om een boord te breien die dan over de geknipte rand komt.
I know, I should have used a thicker yarn and better colours to make it more clear. But, here, on the site of Kate Davies, you can find a whole tutorial about the steek and the further finishing of it. Because it's not finished after the cutting. Then you have to pick up a whole lot of stitches to be able to knit a border that comes over the cutting edge.
